Pune, Maharashtra – May 2, 2025 – The much-awaited Tata Sierra SUV has been seen undergoing careful testing near Tata Motors’ Pune factory. Car lovers have taken pictures of a middle-level version of the Sierra, giving us more hints about how the new car will look and what it will offer. Interestingly, the test car was traveling with a Tata Harrier, maybe to compare it or to help with the testing.
The return of the famous Tata Sierra has made many people excited, especially those who remember the old 3-door SUV from the 1990s. The new version keeps some of the original’s well-known design but also includes Tata’s modern style.
Design Details from the Spy Shots:
Even though the test car was covered up, we can see some important design features:
- Overall Shape: The new Sierra still has a boxy and straight-up look, like the original, but now it has a more useful 5-door design.
- Front Look: Rectangular LED headlights and a high-placed LED strip that also works as turn signals can be seen. The front bumper looks strong, suggesting the SUV can handle different kinds of roads.
- Side View: Square wheel areas, thick plastic around the bottom, and noticeable door trim give it a tough SUV appearance. The special thick middle pillars and the unique windows on the roof – a key part of the first Sierra – are still there. Smooth door handles add a modern touch.
- Back Design: Slim, connected LED taillights are present. Unlike the first Sierra, this new model doesn’t have a spare tire on the back door. A rear windshield wiper on top is also visible.
- Wheels: The spotted middle-level version has wheel covers and thinner tires. Higher-level versions are expected to have 19-inch two-tone alloy wheels. The word ‘SIERRA’ can be seen on the front doors.
Expected Features:
While we couldn’t see inside the test car clearly, the Tata Sierra is expected to have many nice features, possibly including:
- A wide setup with three screens.
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Software updates that happen automatically.
- Seats in the front that can be cooled and moved electronically.
- A large glass roof that opens.
- Lights inside that can change color.
- A good quality sound system.
- Air conditioning that can be set to different temperatures on each side, with vents in the back.
- Advanced safety features like Level-2 ADAS (driver assistance), six airbags, a 360° camera, electronic stability control, and help for going up and down hills.
Engine Choices:
The new Tata Sierra is expected to come with both regular gasoline/diesel engines and electric options.
- Gasoline/Diesel Options: There will likely be several engine choices:
- The 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine (170 hp, 350 Nm) already used in the Harrier and Safari, with 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmission choices.
- Tata’s new 1.5-liter turbo gasoline engine (170 PS, 280 Nm), likely with 6-speed manual and 7-speed DCA (Dual-Clutch Automatic) transmission options.
- A version of the 1.5-liter diesel engine (118 PS, 260 Nm) currently in the Tata Curvv, possibly with 6-speed manual and 7-speed DCA options.
- Electric Option: The Tata Sierra EV is expected to be built on Tata’s Acti.EV platform and might have one or two motors, possibly offering a driving range of about 400-500 km on a single charge.
Market Position and Expected Launch:
The Tata Sierra with regular engines is expected to start at around ₹10.50 lakh, with the best versions possibly costing up to ₹25 lakh. The Sierra EV is expected to be priced from around ₹19 lakh to ₹30 lakh for the top versions.
When it’s launched, likely in the second half of 2025, the Tata Sierra will compete in the popular small SUV market against cars like the Hyundai Creta, Maruti Grand Vitara, Kia Seltos, Toyota Hyryder, Honda Elevate, Skoda Kushaq, and Volkswagen Taigun. By offering both regular and electric versions, Tata Motors aims to get a large share of this growing market. Testing it alongside the Harrier suggests that Tata wants to make sure the Sierra is high-quality and reliable before it’s officially released.
